Saxophonist Barry Winograd has been a figure on the Chicago jazz scene since age 15. A member of the Green Mill Quartet for 20-plus years, he also leads his own bands, including the Alternatives Big Band. Barry also hosts and programs WDCB’s “All Things Jazz” and WXRT’s “Jazz Transfusion.” He will be joined by pianist Dennis Luxion, bassist Ken Haebich, and drummer Eric Montzka.
A docent-guided tour of Mayslake Hall will be offered before the concert at 6:30 p.m. at $5/person.
Spring Night Hike at Mayslake

This naturalist-guided experience will take participants through dusk at Mayslake Forest Preserve. Possible early-spring animal activities include woodcock courtship, chorus frogs singing, great-horned owls hooting, and coyotes howling. The hike will include woodland and prairie environments.

Come join a Forest Preserve ranger and learn the basics of archery, available at some of our most scenic preserves. The clinic will take place inside the Event Hall. Learn archery basics, plus get tips and safety information about the preserves from our staff. You will leave with the confidence to embark on your own adventures.

Introduction to Digital Photography

This class is for beginning photographers. The instructor will lecture on such topics as camera functions, ISO, white balance, depth of field, exposure, metering, histograms, and elements of composition. Students will be given weekly assignments and have their work critiqued. Please bring your camera and manuals to class. Included in the class fee is a one-year membership to Mayslake Nature Study & Photography Club!
This class is taught by Bob Pizzurro, who has over 30 years of experience in macro photography. He is a published nature photographer and has experience as a wedding and portrait photographer.

Fraternal twins Matt and Ben Lewis have been fixtures on the Chicago jazz scene for many years. Both have toured the world as Jazz Ambassadors for the U.S. Department of State and as members of Gary Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band. Vocalist and trumpeter, Matt, regularly performs and teaches around Chicago, and Ben plays as a soloist and has been called “one of the best-kept secrets in Chicago.”

Children’s Writers Critique Class

In this workshop, children’s writers receive a critique of their own work while learning how to critically study the work of other writers. Author, Carmela Martino, will facilitate critique sessions based on specific rules to create a supportive environment. You must bring copies of your manuscript (a picture book, short story, or novel chapter) to the first class. “Active Adults Fishing” is a reintroduction to fishing for active adults looking for an outdoor activity which suits their lifestyles. This is a series of three two-hour classes. The first class will meet at Mayslake Mansion for an indoor introduction, and subsequent meetings will be in the field fishing in Forest Preserve lakes and rivers.
